Pellicle formation by Escherichia coli K-12: Role of adhesins and motility
نویسندگان
چکیده
Initial work to generate physically robust biofilms for biocatalytic applications revealed that Escherichia coli K-12 can form a floating biofilm at the air-liquid interface, commonly referred as pellicle. Unlike other species where pellicle formation is well-characterised, such Bacillus subtilis, there are few reports of E. pellicles in literature. In order study formation, growth model was developed and monitored over time. Mechanical forces, both motility shaking, were shown have effects on development. The role regulation curli, an amyloid protein adhesin critical studied by using promoter-green fluorescent reporters; flow cytometry confocal laser scanning microscopy used monitor curli expression time different locations. Curli found be not only crucial but also heterogeneously expressed within components extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) analysed lectins, revealing distinct morphology air-facing medium-facing sides, spatially- temporally-regulated generation EPS poly-N-acetyl glucosamine colanic acid. We discuss difference between formed K-12, pathogenic strains species, relationship solid surface-attached biofilms.

Polyphenols from olive mill waste affect biofilm formation and motility in Escherichia coli K-12
Olive mill wastes are sources of phenolic compounds with a wide array of biological activities, including antimicrobial effects. A potential option for bioremediation to overcome ecological problems is the reutilization of these natural compounds in food production. The aim of this work was to gain a better understanding of the antimicrobial mode of action of a phenols extract from olive vegeta...
متن کاملHfr Strains of Escherichia coli K-12
Since the first reports by Cavalli-Sforza (9) and Hayes (24) of strains of Escherichia coli K-12 which are conjugational donors of chromosomal markers at high frequency (Hfr strains), many other Hfr strains have been isolated and our understanding of the mechanisms involved in Hfr formation has increased considerably. All Hfr strains arise from the integration of a conjugative plasmid into the ...
متن کاملPhosphoglucomutase mutants of Escherichia coli K-12.
Bacteria with strongly depressed phosphoglucomutase (EC 2.7.5.1) activity are found among the mutants of Escherichia coli which, when grown on maltose, accumulate sufficient amylose to be detectable by iodine staining. These pgm mutants grow poorly on galactose but also accumulate amylose on this carbon source. Growth on lactose does not produce high amylose but, instead, results in the inducti...
متن کاملGuanylate kinase of Escherichia coli K-12.
We have identified the gene gmk, in the same operon as rpoZ, spoT, and recG at about 82 minutes on the Escherichia coli chromosome. The gmk (GMP kinase) gene encodes a peptide of 23,592 Da, possessing extensive similarity to the amino acid sequence of guanylate kinase from yeast. To confirm that gmk truly encodes guanylate kinase and to explore some of its enzymatic features, we have overproduc...
متن کاملFrameshift suppression by thyA mutants of Escherichia coli K-12.
We have extended our previous study on the suppression of frameshift mutants by Escherichia coli thyA mutants by assaying suppression of 15 rIIB frameshift mutants of bacteriophage T4 on one of our suppressing thyA mutant strains. The majority of insertion mutants were suppressible, whereas none of the deletion mutants tested was suppressible. Frameshift suppression could be inhibited by adding...
